With groundhog day rapidly approaching, I have some aggravation towards the way Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his burrow but it is impossible to see his shadow because there are so many people, equipment & booths around him. These people who run the event then say he didn't see his shadow & say there will be an early spring.

Well, I'm tired of relying of this "commercial" groundhog informing me how much winter is left. I'd like to get my own groundhog and intend to let him come out in a very clear non crowded area. That way I will at least know the truth if we'll have 6 more weeks of winter or not. Should I get my own groundhog?

That is nuts. There is now way the groundhog predicts the weather. Get a life.

Fantastic Idea!!!

You may want to take a step further and start breeding groundhogs and supply those like-minded. You could start a ranch - a groundhog ranch, ship those baby groundhogs all over the country. You'd be a millionaire! Easter has it's chicks & bunnies. Valentines day is not complete w/out candy hearts... Why shouldn't groundhog day come w/ groundhogs? Go forth you brave soul, into a new and rewarding future!

Groundhog day is a holdover of the pagan holiday of Imbolc. The tradition of an animal coming out of the burrow is part of the awakening of spring.

Of the eight pagan holidays, the cross-quarter days, of which this is the first, are used as inverse weather predictors. (If it's fine, the weather will turn foul, and if it's foul, the weather will turn fine.)

are you kidding? seriously, do you actually believe that groundhogs predict the weather?

there is no way to predict the "truth" when it comes to weather - just ask any weather reporter on any news program. spring begins each year on the vernal equinox, cold or not. consult a farmers almanac or heck, any old calendar, for the appropriate date. if it is still cold, keep wearing your winter coat. if it is warming up, go with a windbreaker... sheesh! just because it's spring, its not going to be a guaranteed 80 degrees f. during the day and time to put on shorts! use common sense.
