A lot depends on whether or not you have a purebred, registered dog. And what kind of dog you have.
Agility is a great sport, very fast-paced and the dogs love it. There are a number of different organizations, many of them allow mixed breeds.
If there is a 4H club near you they have some dog activities.
If you have a purebred, even if it's not registered, you can compete in many performance activities like obedience, flyball, tracking etc.
If your dog is AKC registered and not spayed/neutered, you can do dog showing and junior handling.
Another activity is training your dog to be a certified Therapy Dog. Then you can do visitations at hospitals and the like.
Teaching your dog a variety of trick is fun too.
Good for you for doing something with your dog. You will find that the more you work together the closer the bond between you will be.

Obedience training is always really fun, or get into agility. If your dog is a fast runner or a herder, get her into Flyball thats a way cool sport for dogs. I do it with my Australian Shepherd/Coyote mix. She is like a blur of lightning and it keeps her mind totally busy. My other dogs try but shes the fastest. 13 is a great age your young and energetic you can do all these cool sports easily. It will keep you active and your dog will love it. If you master the Obediance part you can think about competing in Conformation if you dog is registered and purbred, even if not, there are non- purbred or pet classes that you can do conformation and obediance trials and win ribbons and things. Its fun I did it when I was 13. I included some Flyball and agility links also, go online and look up dog clubs in your area and see where there are places you can go for competitions and for trainers to help you out. The AKC website also has listings of trainers and clubs or organization for several events held near to where you live if your in the US

Agility is really fun, and the people that you meet who compete in agility are very cool. Flyball is another good suggestion - as with any sport, it might be a challenge to learn at first, but it's very rewarding to do!

get him a good book on how to train a dog .. send them to obedience training ( the boy not you as these training camps are for the dog owner more than the dog ) . and finally insist that daily he must walk the dog for at least 10 minute..
