Part of the problem also was VW did not put drains on the key mechanisms until the mid 1997 model year. You can buy updated locks to prevent the liquid build up.

Wipe down rubber seal around door with WD-40 several times and squirt it in key hole. Check door closing mechanism and reset it with screw driver while holding or lifting door handle to open position and give it a squirt too.

Have the doors checked to see if they are sagging(I doubt it). Oil the hinges and door latch mechanism. Also check the rubber seal around the door to be sure it is contacting the way it should.

these cars are notorious for this problem.
