A grove would be a small clump of trees of around 50 -100 or so- These are usually located around country farms or spaced out in plains to help with wind and snow control.
We have one in our backyard.

A wood is bigger than a grove yet is more open inside - as in its easier to walk around inside. Its not so clumped full of plants and trees in a small place. Acres can be from 5 - 100.

A forest is basically any other tree formation that you cannot discern the end of from where you stand. Tons of trees and can last for miles.

correct that grove is planted by man but the traditional meaning of woods is an immature forest ( has more ground vegetation and younger trees )

in most cases you would enter the forest through the woods ( the forest is always expanding with woods around the perimeter until it reaches the maximum possible size )

I haven't looked it up, but to me a grove is planted by people, while forests and woods are natural. The latter two are different words for the same thing.

I would think

A grove is usualy man made, like a pecan grove.

the woods is a large area densely covered with lots of different trees and brush. Like someone living deep in the woods.

a forest is a place trees are grown and cut as they are ready to market.
Like the natural forest.

I think grove is a smallish group of trees, a wood is larger and a forest is really large.
