Call the airline in advance. I have seen them provide parents with seats in the center, in front of everyone so you are not squeezed in. Some airplanes also have fold down beds for little kids where they can sleep during the flight (also front center of each section) ...

Bring a couple of portable DVD players. Even if the airline has in-seat screens, the cartoon network or other children's programming isn't always to a child's liking. If they each have their own DVD players and videos, they will be much happier. Also, request a row of seats with plug-in so that you can recharge your DVD players or other electronics in flight. Make sure that you have the right kind of adapter for your device(s), as well. On American Airlines, the electrical plugs/outlets use cigarette lighter style plugs only.

Also, stash a few new toys or coloring books that you can pull out as a "surprise" during the flight, if the kids get cranky or bored. Also, bring a few extra of their favorite snacks in case they don't like the airline food.

We recently traveled 14 hours (FRA to DFW) with a 4 year old and 6 month old and they did great. We brought our their own (small) pillows and favorite blankets; and when it was time to sleep, we changed them into pajamas (especially for the 4 year old) to at least get her mentally ready for sleep. We read a couple of stories and did our "normal" bedtime routine (minus brushing teeth!) and she went right to sleep.

Good luck!!!!

Lisa
