I hope you like this question, give me a star if you do, I've always been into first person shooters; and my family has some military in it. I never joined the military..and always wondered...and think I have an answer...

Are there video games out there that realistically use real world military in it? By this I mean how good of a job do video games do of mimicking real war, strategy, what games can't protray yet, what in real world works but doesn't in games, and what games have done a decent job?

I think we all know of a couple of first person shooters....all multiplayer...

Battlefield 1942, 2, 2142
Call of Duty
Counter Strike
Full Stectrum Warrior

(I for one has never seen a multiplayer game that actually makes using suppression fire work well...maybe it's because in games you don't worry about dying and just run and get shot)

Americas Army is very realistic for close order battle, engagement ranges are very limited. Operation Flashpoint is an older game but it was the most realistic depiction of infantry combat. I served in the Army from 87-95 11b Airborne Infantry and that game gave me flashbacks lol. Battlefield 2 is not realistic at all, and the Ghost Recon games are so so in the realism factor.

According to bro's who consisted of one Ranger, and a few Special Operators, SOCOM is good, as are the Tom Clancy series. Naturally the "America's Army" (IIRC) series from the US Army, is also accurate-unsurprisingly.
My forte is flying so these are my recommendations for sims/combat games:

1- Falcon 4.0 (or higher)
2- IL2, and all its sequels
Obviously, for pure sim, commercial/private aircraft Microsoft Flight Simulator stands alone.

My husband plays Ghost Recon, and a lot of other Tom Clancy games. Also First to Fight. He's says it's pretty accurate... besides being 2-D inside a TV.

I dont know about first person shooter, but i know SOCOM US Navy Seals does a good job.

Also the game, "America's Soldier" was created using millions of tax payers' money to create a game to help recruit for the Iraq War.
