My husband, our 4 year old and I are considering a move to Atlanta. But it is such a big city and I know so little about it, I need help! I'm looking for the perfect place to live while we're there. A good preschool/pre-K, still close enough to the MARTA, fairly cheap rent for apartments, good neighborhood, etc. Any ideas? I would really appreciate any help I can get!!

Personally I wouldnt live in Atlanta, or the west side of Atlanta. Theres suburbs just outside of Atlanta that Marta goes too. Theres too many towns to list, but check out these links. You'll be able to find a place to live, schools, employment, etc etc........

I suggest you take a look at Atlantic Station, a major shopping/business/residential in midtown Atlanta. Don't know about schools near there, but it is minutes from MARTA and there are quite a few good stores so you could walk to almost anything.

I lived 4 years in Doraville when I was at college in Atlanta and I loved it so much. Great community and a safe neighborhood too. I had friends who lived in Duluth (about 4 exits to the north of Doraville)…. a great place too. Some places can be very depressing… always check out the areas in daylights and at nights before you rent.

I am a Realtor in ATL and a good idea for someone moving out of state is to research a few different counties. Gwinnett County is one of our fastest growing counties, and I highly recommend it. There is also Cobb county, North Fulton (a little expensive, but great schools), Cherokee County, and Forsyth (a little far).

You can always look at school reports once you find a county that you like.

Don't go it alone! If you are looking to rent an apartment, there is a great free service here known as "PROMOVE", and they specialize in helping find a good area/apartment complex for absolutely free (the complexes pay them for this). They also have all the school scores.

The best place to live is near the "oak Grove" area. I grew up there and it is a wonderful area. Oak Grove is one of the best elementary schools in dekalb county and it feeds into some really good highschools too. The area is really nice and humble and about 20 minutes from everywhere else in atlanta. Marta goes there and there are plenty of nice apartments in the area. It is about 10 minutes from emory, 10min from downtown, 20 min from buckhead, 15min from decatur. Check out the area!!

I live in the Virginia Highlands. It is a great neighborhood. Very fun. And just a few block away from Morningside, which has an excellent school system. The VIrginia Highlands are very convenient to downtown, we have MARTA and the Midtown Station is pretty close.

If you're interested in condo (high-rise) living you should check out www.myurbancity.com. There's a ton of new condo buildings information there, as well as useful map that shows all the new condo developments around Atlanta.
