From a Jewish perspective, there are a couple of sources.

1) praying is sometimes described as 'trembling' before God. There rocking motion resembles trembling.

2) Jewish prayers, especially when said in Hebrew, tend to have a certain rhythm. The rocking helps keep the cadence.

I'm sure others will come up with some other reasons, but these are the 2 best I've heard.

A deep answer: the same question is addressed in the Zohar alongside the lines of why can't Jews shop nonetheless. it incredibly is replied with a parable of a candle whose flame can't shop nonetheless. the respond seems to complicate concerns for the reason which you presently could comprehend why a candle easy strikes around. i've got faith the explaination I heard is that the flame shuckles through fact it desires to pass away the wick yet demands the wick to stay aflame. hence the same with shuckling that's symbolic to the soul's craving for its source yet keeps to be linked to the physique. a easier answer is that the rythme of the davening has a similiar consequence on a guy or woman to a guitar participant that shuckles his head through fact the rythme of the davening helps the prayers come out with greater kavanah(reason) or feeling. The question could be prolonged added exterior of the area of Judaism, why do human beings p.c.. back and fourth? you would be conscious that the same those that shuckle additionally p.c... human beings p.c.. while they have lots on their strategies and pacing itself has a healing tai-chi variety consequence on the physique for a loss of a greater Jewish occasion.
