No, but punishment is society's version of vengeance. Felons are sent to prison AS punishment, not FOR punishment.
Studies have determined that a large percentage of offenders possess a faulty sense of reality. If they can't see things the way they really are punishment isn't going to deter them much because they lack the ability to perceive the need to adjust their behavior. In ancient times, hands were lopped off for stealing a loaf of bread. It didn't stop bread from getting stolen so they stopped using that form of punishment......................
The question is: Can we expect a normal reaction to punishment from people who are not normal????

There are no effective prisons and more than likely anybody that stays in a prison for more than five years will probably do the same thing just to go back in so i believe in a strict punishment so they will think twice before they do it again. Hell in prison they have more things do like use the computer or get an education free meals.
