My family likes Cherry Hill Park. It's a great campground and it is not far from the Metro. They have two outdoor pools, one is heated, and a hot tub. I think they have three different bath houses. We have never had to wait in line to get a shower, even on the weekend. They have a lot of other amenities too. Check out their web site at: http://www.cherryhillpark.com/

If you're looking for a place within one hour from the city center, try Burke Lake. There's a park with a fishing pier and boat rentals, activities, etc., and on the opposite side of the lake there are campsites (primitive, i.e. no power or water hook-ups). Good fishing year-round, nice hiking trails. Can get a little crowded on summer weekends, though.

Try the Shenandoah National Park.

I don't know how far it is away but there is place called "Little Bennet" in Maryland. I think Fredrick county...Maybe Carrol. You wont find anything within an hour. An hour away from DC you would be in suburbs still.(with good traffic)

Sky Meadows State Park in Virginia... it might be a little over an hour depending on traffic but it's nice there definitely worth going
