I'm curious how it compares to missionaries in our church- they're only allowed to call home twice a year so that they stay better focused on their missionary work.

They can call as often as they want to.

If they are deployed, they may not have access to a phone, so calls may be limited.

But when not deployed, they can do what they want to do in thier off duty hours.

Where they are depends on how often they can call home. For example, when I was in Antarctica (McMurdo Station) we could call ONLY when we could get up a Ham Radio/phone patch and only for 10 minutes IF the signal stayed. The radio operator on the base would hook up with one of the contacts in the U.S. and that person would make a collect call to our family. We only had a few minutes and had to end each time with OVER.
It seems a bit restrictive the the missionaries in your faith are only allowed TWO phone calls a year. I've never heard that (Baptist for over 40 years).

it depends on where they are and what unit they are with.
My husband was allowed one 5min phone call a week. After that he had to pay to call home. We sent calling cards and did a lot of IMing.
