Because two of them will fit in a small bedroom shared by two children. This was done a lot in the 1950s, and the beds normally had matching headboards and bedspreads. (T.v. example: "Leave it to Beaver.").

Years ago when mothers laid children down to rest, more than one had trouble fitting in a single. Thus, the twin size was available to accommodate two children or a larger size adult.
A single bed is made for one......a twin "can be" for two depending on the size person.....
