I am referring to adults but there are teenage cousins that I'm worried about.

It depends on who is telling the jokes and how old they are. My mother always said when I was a child "If you don't want to see it at the table, don't talk about it at the table".

However if you are referring to other adults, I just tell people that I find it very degrading and disrespectful. Also I ask them to please respect me and not tell these types of jokes around me. If it continues, I just get up and leave the room. They will get the hint. But always remember, you cannot control another person's action.

Don't go to holiday meals? That is my method. I choose not to be a part of anyone's life who doesn't have respect for others. If that isn't an option, when they tell a joke, just stare at them without laughing. Maybe then they will get the hint that their jokes aren't humorous.

I always say "excuse me my child is in the room" and if they proceed make it very well known to them that that was inappropriate. The host of the dinner should then do something. ( ya know like hitting the foul mouthed teenager in the head with a big spoon!!) That's what grandma is for!
