I don't know the rating of the charger. I got it off the street, and there's nothing written on it. Any idea what a safe charging time would be?

How big is the charger? Usually, fast chargers are bigger than slow chargers because they need circuitry to sense the charge in the battery shut off the fast charge when it is done. If the charger is just a little wall wart or something like that, it would be a slow charger.

It shouldn't matter to you, though. The fast chargers are designed to shut off the high charge rate and switch to a slow, maintainence charge when the battery is full. You should be able to leave the battery in until you need it next.

There are chargers that take 14 hrs to fully charge batteries, then there are some that take 4 or 5 hours. Ray-o-vac has one that they claim takes 15 minutes to charge. So there is no way to know for sure. However, most NiMH chargers turn off when they are finished charging so just try them and see. If it is a fast charger the batteries will get quite warm when charging - this is normal.
