I hear how people talk about Tampa and the surounding area having so much traffic, they make it sound like it's as bad as New York... I might be moving down there from New York and wanted to know how bad the traffic really is for the tampa, clearwater, Lutz, Hyde Park, Carrollwood, Plant city, etc.

Thanks!

Even though the Tampa Bay metro area has a population of just over 2 million (compared to over 8 million in NYC) the commute times are about the same. Since Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater is surrounded by water, tie-ups on bridges plague commuters much like NYC. Accidents are very common on major junctions and there is perpetual construction on major roadways. At least there are no tunnels here to get stuck in.

A commute from north Pinellas County (25-30 miles) to downtown Tampa will take about 45 minutes in good traffic, and up to 1-1/2 hours in rush hour. By way of comparison, this is about the same distance from White Plains, Hicksville, or Plainfield, NJ into lower Manhattan.

Hyde Park is a stone-throw from downtown Tampa, basically walking distance. Carrollwood is further, maybe 8 miles. Lutz is about 15 miles and Clearwater is about 25 miles.

There is no real public transportation system in the Tampa Bay Area.

Hope this information helps.
