they used special Cleveland style heads with huge ports so they could make lots of horsepower :)
Regular Cleveland heads won't work on a windsor motor

Wow. I could go on forever about this question, but I'll REALLY try to be short... The Boss 302 Mustang made in 1969 for Trans-Am racing, had four bolt mains. Very rare... It was also made in 1970. Mercury also had it's version of Ford's Mustang Boss 302, called the Cougar Eliminator, in 1969 and 1970. They also were for Trans-Am racing. Ford and Mercury made a little over 500 of them because The racing santioning body required any special racing engines a manufacturer made had to be put into a production vehicle. I do not believe the Windsor 302 used today has 4 bolt mains, nor did they ever have them. The Windsor 302 has been around since 1968, when it replaced the 289 small block. Ah, yes.... Those were the days...

The regular 302 was a usual "wedge motor" with all the valves in a row. The Boss 302 has the intake valves "canted" or tilted to improve flow. It is like the top of the cylinder was twisted a few degrees and the valve are no longer in one row. It is much like the 351 Cleveland head. (It is not at all like the Boss 429 which is a "hemi".)

For all practical purposes, the Boss is a Windsor-style
block with Cleveland "4V" style heads.

there is no difference in the block or the heads. you can not put 351 cleavend heads because it would fit. all ford did was put a bigger cam in the car to up the compression ratio and that is were the power came from
