Dear Dr.Phil,
I am writing you about my son, He lives in a residential home and comes home every other week-end, Unfortunately he has a lot of issues, he has bi-polar R/O, ADHD, Oppositional Difient Disorder and is very impulsive... This is his 4th time living in a residential facility, and has had many hospitalizations.. My fear is that he will never be able to live in our home again, I am in therapy,my daughter and my ex husband all go to therapy. We are very involved in all of my sons therapy's. My question to you is is there anything else that we can do to be able to have my son live in our home again and stay in the home and not have to go back to any residential homes again... He constinaly neees supervision, and structure which is hard to give him like a residential home can... I dont want to be featured on a show because of problems with family. But i would appriciate any help or advise you could give us... Thank-you Cheryl Angelides

This lady posted this here because she is afraid. She needs some comforting advice and no one seems to sympathies with her. I do. I am so sorry for your dilemma. I don't have any medical advice to give you but I do care. Sometimes, it is hard for us to accept things that happen. I don't know if you are religious or not but I am offering advice on how to cope a little better. I know you are devastated by the situation and I know you love your son. But, at this time you must do what is best for him. He is getting professional treatment and perhaps someday he can come back home. But, for the moment, you have to try to go on with your life and hand the burden over to God. He always knows what is best but we have to do our part to overcome our hurts. It can get better for you if you just realize there is a higher power that loves all of us. It might not happen now, but in the future with a lot of praying God will intervene. Right now, pray for guidance and strength to endure and let God handle the rest. I wish you luck and my prayers are with you and your family, who need you too. I care....

your son needs help, and you can not give him the help he needs. he needs the help of a psychiatrist that can perscribe the medicine he needs. this will take time to get correct. in the meantime its trial and error. if your not ready for that in your household than he needs to stay in a residential house.

dont feel bad about keeping him there. in order to help him you must help yourself first. if this is too much for you to handle then dont try it. if you do your setting yourself up for failure.

Keep him on his medication and make him accountable for his actions. Don't make him see you feel sorry for him or he will take advantage of that. Yes he has problems but he can continue medication and counseling and still be at home and live a very productive life.
