The fact that it means both hello and goodbye makes it an exceedingly odd word. Not too many of those around with such opposite definitions.

Yes Aloha does mean both hello and goodbye, but that is only the small meaning of the word. Aloha, is a feeling of respect for our Islands, and for all people, who live there. We give respect to the land , to the Hawaiian culture, and to each other. To show Aloha, is simply being respectful to Hawaii, it's culture, and it's people. With all that has happened here in Hawaii, to the people, over development, busy roads, long lines at stores, and everywhere, busy, it amazes me how everybody still keep Aloha alive, because Aloha is powerful in all of our hearts that understand this word, and we respect the land we live on and the culture that goes with it. Aloha...........

Aloha is actually a recognition of another's humanity and spirit. Hello, goodbye, and I love you are the tourist versions, but in each of these three ways, you also recognize each other's spirits. Letting another driver into the lane in front of you with a wave and a smile is another way of "aloha". See if you can think of others ways to "live aloha".

The term "ha" in HAwaiian means "divine breath" in English. Another example, the Hawaiian word "ha'ole" translated into English means "a person without divine breath".
So, aloha, transliterated from Hawaiian literally means:
"May you be in the presence of the divine breath"

Aloah can also mean love, as in, "the spirit of Aloah."
So you can use the word to say hello, goodbye and to express your love.
