When I try calling her to come in from the back yard, she just looks at me, but when my husband tells her she listens. I know this means somthing about looking at him as the alpha and me as a softy.Oh ya, alot of times she stands on her hind legs and straches the hell out of the sliding glass door. When i go to let her in she runs away. Help she is driving me crazy.

It sounds like your husband is the alpha, but you need to show your pooch that you are second in command.

Make sure you either do this in the house or in an enclosed area to prevent her from running away. The best way is to start out putting her on her leash. Every time you say "come" gently pull her toward you. Then tell her what a good girl she is and reward her. You're going to have to repeat this process several times. Pretty quickly, she will get the idea what she is suppose to do. After she comes without you having to pull her towards you, you can then take the leash off and tell her to come. When she does, PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE!!!!!

I know of no husky that will listen to it's owners 100% of the time, male or female. I have a husky and while she listens to me most of the time, she is still a husky an if she doesn't want to come in she won't. I have to step out into the backyard in these instances and play the came of ALPHA ALPHA. I leave the sliding door open, point and do not chase her but try to circle behind her and then tell her to go inside. That is their personality, make no mistake your husky is not dumb, but she has very selective hearing. I can teach my husky a trick in a matter of minutes and it might take weeks to get my shepherds to do the trick, the difference, once the shepherds know the trick they will do it on command, the husky may or may not depending on whether she thinks it might be fun or not, or how many people are there to coo over her when she does the trick.

Maybe Daniel has the right idea, try the steak trick :)

Stand in a dominant way. I had to do this too, same problem.
Place your hands on your hips, square off to the dog, look him/her right in the eyes and make your commands. Stand there and don't move till the dog listens. Lower your voice but speak firmly...unrelenting. Do not go anywhere till the dog starts listening to you. Also, dont have your husband stand by you when you're doing this or the dog may listen only cuz he's there..

You'll get it down .

Good luck!

Milk bones can work wonders. When you call her and she comes give her a reward in the form of a milk bone which you hold up when she comes. Before entering the house have her sit quietly, while you tell her how good she is and then reward her with the bone upon entering and sitting nicely again. Soon she will come when you call, but continue the reward system and you will join the alpha order with your husband.

HaHa you have a Huskie. Let me guess... Male

They are stuborn, opinionated and free spirited. They also love to run away for a few hours and then come back when they feel like it. Good luck!
They do not responde well to beatings or physical punishment. I would try food as a reward.

I would like to address your feeling of discouragement regarding your Husky.First, do you know about eye contact? You have a staring contest and whoever looks away first is admitting weakness, submission. May turn over onto its back to reinforce submission. May allow the dominant one Who did not flinch to come and sniff the belly. THAT is total submission. Dog style. Try it and be sure you win. Don't blink.
Perhaps what Information I can give you can give you a new perspective on things. Believe me, I have been in your shoes. If our Husky got out of the fenced yard(she could climb it) You could call until you turned blue and she would not come back. What she did was run in a straight line. So we would go in a straight line to find her. across many towns.
We had that dog for many years and she was a wonderful dog, as are most huskies. But on one subject, obedience, she was not about to cooperate.
We learned from a vet who went to Alaska every year (20 yrs. ) to compete in the Ididerod (sled dog championships) : He explained: Huskies are not that far away from the days when, as sled dogs, they were not kept as pets, but as working dogs. That little bit of wildness is still in them and it is nearly impossible to train it out of them. if YOU take her to Doggie school with a good trainer very familier with Huskies, and lots of home practice of the commands, that will help. You take her, train with her, practive at home with her, and ask your husband not to participate. This is about YOU and your husky.
Husky trivia: they are still carrying their "harness marks". look at her back, and notice how the hair lays flat (where the harness would be) and puffs out behind the imaginary leather harness. They all have this if they are purebred. And they still have "snowshoe paws," webbed tor walking on snow. and also, they still believe they are supposed to PULL. Watch how she leans against the collar or harness, hind legs are the driving machine. Offer her some resistence--lean back. Huskies are not like other dogs, and please do not listen to people telling you what to do unless they are talking about Huskies! PS I think she is inviting you to come out and play. pps; get the book "The Call Of The Wild" . A story about a domestic dog, (husky or malamute?) who has a great life as a family dog in the suburbs, until one day someone stole him right out of his own back yard. and took him to Alaska to be a sled dog. Best of luck to you.

There is the BEST training treat available at all the pet stores. I call it a "dog log", but it's just compressed dog food packaged to look like a sausage. It comes in different flavors, including lamb and rice for sensitive tummies. Slice a piece off (refidgerate the rest) and cut it up into bite-size pieces. Keep these in a tupperware container. Then, use these little pieces for training. DOGS LOVE THEM and will do ANYTHING for them!!! While training, be firm and guiding and when your dog does well, reward with a treat. He'll learn quickly.

I have the same problem with my schnauzer, but she only listens to me. My boyfriend can sit there and call her for hours, and she will stare at him and not budge. But the second I even quietly say her name, she's jumping up on me. Some dogs are just one person dogs.

you need to speak to this dog firmly and use praise when the dog responds correctly. I used a pocket of treats to train my dog. Don't feed dog before working on training. Use treats as reward for dog when it comes to you as called. Use simple commands as in calling name and say HERE when he comes to you tell him sit and give treat. Confirm by petting that he is good. Never hit this animal or "spank" it for being incorrect. He is learning and we all make errors.

When she's in the house tell her to "come"... give her a piece of hotdog, go some where else in the house and tell her to "come" keep doing this once she realizes that everytime she "comes" she gets a treat.. be stern with her, when you say "come" she needs to right then and there not when she wants to... this helped with my german shepherd!
