I happen to be one of those women that have a household like you describe. I am loathe to look for a handout. What I need is a hand up. I would love to go to work, but due to having a child with learning disabilities and behavioral problems jobs are VERY hard to come by for me. I have been unemployed for five years because the company I was with went under and I got laid off. I would love to return to work, but at this point it would have to be from home. I have an internet connection (sometimes) at home but most of the time thru a library. I would be glad to do some of those at home jobs of data entry and such, but there are NO FREE RESOURCES to find those jobs that aren't a scam. Everyone keeps saying that there are thousands of them, but every time I go to look for one, I have to pay to access the information. I don't even own a credit card or checking account. I can't access it. Create a free site that will enable us to do better for our families. There are so many resources out there for the middle and upper middle class. What about those of us that have three kids living in a rundown two bedroom farmhouse in the middle of no where? Help me find a job that will enable me to bring in an extra income from home on my computer, and I would be glad to accept it. I am needed at home because of my son. If I can work a schedule around his school times and when they need me at the school, I think we could handle it ourselves without any "extra" funds or the like coming from elsewhere. Put people to work...

In general, people do not want charity. There are some out there that would live off of it if they could, but most of us ARE NOT THAT WAY. I want to work for what I have. But the work is going to cost me money that is better spent feeding my kids the Ramen Noodle soups that is the only thing I can afford sometimes. Sounds harsh but it is the truth. This is what most of the women and men that are in the same situation as me tell me. They don't want help such that it is a handout. They want help at making themselves better "breadwinners" for their family. Call it pride or whatever, but without pride we just become beggers, and no one wants to raise their children to beg. They want to be something more to inspire their children to be even more than they became.

In a country full of multimillionaires that either got that way from a "great idea" or the local lottery, it is insane to see that we have starving children in every state, because those multimillionaires are sending their money to other countries as a tax write off, instead of walking up to the starving family in their own town and handing them the 5 or 6 thousand dollars it would cost to feed that poor family for a year.

You want to know what you can do? That would be it. More free resources for REAL "Work from home" jobs and not these tiered marketing programs and survey sites. We need real jobs that will generate a real paycheck.

Getting the rich folk to see that while they are driving around in their luxury cars and SUVS that the family on the other side of town just had their gas or lights cut off, because they had to have food to feed the little girl that is crying that she is hungry.

There is so much that we can do right here, but our biggest investments are going to other countries and into making the wealthy wealthier.

Feed me and I will come back for more food. Teach me and I will learn how to provide for myself and my own.

The biggest problem, as I see it, is that there are people and there are public services, and in some cases one cannot reach the other because of transportation, because they can't phone (for one reason or other), because of the red tape (having to fill out forms, and timely, and rules), etc.

What exactly does the word "enough" mean. Usually, as say in helping foreign countries America provides a lot of food to people, but the giving can't go on forever as a country needs to have a means of making their own food and jobs and solve their own corruption, and take steps to learn what the problem is/was that caused the food shortage and change it, and be able to have leaders that want to help the people survive. In reality we can't help people (actually help their ministers/presidents to help them) long term without some changes happening.

If you are talking about Americans, then realize that sometimes it takes 2 jobs to have enough income and they need food while they get a micro loan (for like farming, some idea that will give back like animals on a farm have babies and improve their income), but just giving money without a plan or something that will give back is futile and something lots of poor people struggle with. While they are struggling there is a security problem, so cities provide policing to attempt to help their situations.

This is in response to "Tara D" email - try crafting, quilting, or something you can do from home and sell. Baking? Something that will earn you extra income. I know that's not the answer you are looking for - but I wanted to atleast let you know my idea. As for the rest of it - I think our country DCF/HRS and whatever else it is called needs to be more strict on those that abuse the system so there will be more help for those that honestly need it. Drug test those on assistance - if they fail - give them a chance to get clean if they don't - remove them from assistance. Why should us tax payers pay for them to live off the state and buy drugs, etc.? Also - set a limit to how many children can be had by families on assistance. People pop babies out just to get more money from the state - that needs to stop! Put them on mandatory birth control or their assistance will be revoked. Once they are on their feet - they can have whatever babies they want - but they won't because then they'll have to pay for them. These are just some of the things we can do to try and help those in need......be more cautious about who we give help to. Get rid of those that abuse the system so more help can go to those that really need it and not taking advantage.

Stop paying athletes millions of dollars a year just because they can play a sport.

There are actually a lot of food closets available to those in need. You can also look into charities that offer food donation services. If one belongs to a religious congregation, they should be able to help out as well.

we have to be careful , is it for the hungry or for the lazy? That is a question that you must always ask before you donate, the food shelf started out with goo intentions but now it seems many are using this system to have more money for drinking , gambling, and smoking or just plain not working hard for a living.

Go buy their groceries. You will be SO blessed.

Other than that, local churches that have food closets, let people go in and bring out groceries FREE. At least, that is what OUR food closet does.
