My insurer, Budget, will not provide an excess and suggested I go without any cover.

That was a fatuous response from Budget! Ring around some other insurers. I know for a fact that some are happy to cover you outside Europe, tho' I can't say who 'cos some git will report me for advertising!

Good luck.

If your very insurer said THAT... there may not be any other options. I would call them back and speak to someone else. Ask for a supervisor.

OR... Just put the car on the Ferry and hope for the best. The only dangerous part is driving it on there with the ramps they provide but it's okay. Never seen a car go down!

for a start why go if you knew your insurance was about to laps while you were away. you should have renewed it befor going. Now if you get stoped in europe without insurance then i hope you like there food as from experance in italy. first they impound your car ,then they charge you to have it towed to the impound, and then charge you for each day its in there ,been there and got the tea shirt SO DONT DO IT NOT A GOOD unless you want a long walk home
