That's a very subjective (and very loaded) question, asking you to share your own experiences and reveal your own thought processes. There is no "best" answer. I suggest you write it yourself.

I was raised up in the church and got baptized as a young age.
I always believed someone was watching over me, because at an early age I went to live with my grandparents and later realized that was the best thing. I was taught to pray, but didn't know the full effect of God's Grace and Mercy until I became a teenager.

I rededicated my life to God, because I realized that the guilty I was holding on to, the life of lies I had made, and the sin I was trapped in I could not carry (Matt. 11:28). I needed a Savior to help me. Since then I have felt better. Not just in my mind "happiness," but in my soul. I have free from the bondage of sin and life's bad times (Gal. 5:1). Even when I am sad, I have the joy of the Lord for He is my strength (Psa. 30:5). When I am out of sync or communication with God, my whole world is not right. I can not focus on what to get done and my heartaches. I miss God, like I would a family member.

My assurance of salvation and eternal life has come from experience. The scripture says it is by grace you have been saved (Eph. 2:5,8).

I grew up in a christian home but never going to the same school for more that 3 years in a row was rough. After the final move, I realize I was lost and alone. I needed a savior and a friend. 2 Timothy 1:12 says, "That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day."

I gave my life to Jesus when I was 5 years old. I believed the scripture John 3:16-18. I immediatley started asking questions that could not be answered by the adults around me. I continued to be "rebellious" and refused to swallow all that I was being taught. I was in my 30's when I finally started getting answers that made sense. I left the religious church I had attended my whole life and started to actually read the Bible as it is written instead of seeing all that I had heard. I was lied to about many things but God stayed with me and saved my life on several occasions to wake me up. I realized that what the Bible says is that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart (soul) that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. (Romans 10:9) If you continue reading in chapter 10 it tells you many things. vs 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. John chapter one tells us the the "word" is Jesus Christ. If you read Romans 11: (1-19) 20-well, the end of the chapter. But vs 20 & 21 takes away the arguement on whether eternal security exsists. "Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 for if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee." God wants us to obey him. I Corinthians 13 tells us without love, all that we do is nothing. So love and obey God. Most churches don't do things like they did in the New Testament. Why not? Jesus told the apostles to teach what they had been taught and to continue on. I digress. Romans 10 tells you how to be saved. How I got to that point, God lead me there. No person saves anyone save Jesus Christ who came was hung on a cross, died, was buried and rose again the third day according to the scriptures (I Corinthians 15:1-4) so we can be saved. Believe God and the Bible. Test with the Bible and prayer everything you hear. The Bible tells us that for a reason. There are false teachers out there, even false Christs, as the Bible says.

How and why did you become a Christian?

I read The Bible!
~~~~~~~~~`
Salvation
Imagine standing on the roof a ten-story building. A parade is going to start in the street below. It forms, it begins, and it travels the parade rout length and then disperses. All this happened in your view.
This is the way OUR GOD sees us! Before our birth HE knows the complete and whole story! But HE also orchestrated our "parade rout" before we were even born. That is called PREDESTINATION. Before we were even born HE knew everything.
Romans 8: 30. Ephesians 1: 5. Ephesians 1: 11.
If at some time in a persons life they accept Jesus the Christ (Saviour) as their own personal Saviour.
Realize that HE, Jesus, died for his or her own personal and individual sins.
Is truly sorry (repents) for all the sins he or she has committed and for the evil thoughts and deeds done.
Asks Jesus to "come in to his or her heart" and "wash it clean" of sins.
Accepts Jesus as THE ONLY SAVIOUR and accepts that Jesus is TRULY GOD.
That person is SAVED from Hellfire FOR EVER! This person is now "converted".
The process of becoming saved is called JUSTIFICATION.
The penalty for sins committed are removed. Romans 4: 7f. 2Corinthians 5:19.
The condemnation is gone. Romans 8: 1, 33f.
There is peace with GOD. Romans 5: 1. Ephesians 2: 14-17.
One is restored to GODS favour. Romans 4: 6 1Corinthians 1: 30. 2Corinthians 5: 21.
The believer is now clothed in a righteousness not his own, provided by Jesus, and is therefore acceptable to fellowship with GOD.
There is now "heirship" to eternal life. Titus 3: 7.
Righteous living becomes possible. Philippians 1: 11. 1John 3: 7.
The JUISTIFIED person is assured that he or she will be SAVED from the coming wrath of GOD. Romans 5: 9. 1Thesalonians 1: 10.
The person is assured of GLORIFICATION (Going to Heaven). Matthew 13: 43. Romans 8: 30.
Galatians 5: 5.
The moment a person believes in Jesus The Christ that person is SANCTIFIED.
Notice in The Bible that the believers are called SAINTS? ALL believers are saints. That is because they have been sanctified. It does NOT mean perfect! 1 Corinthians 1: 2. Ephesians 1: 1. Colossians 1: 2. Hebrews 10: 10. Jude 3.
In 1Corinthians we have proof that one can still be "fleshy" and be SAVED or Sanctified.
Christ Sanctified the SAVED by the shedding of HIS own blood. Hebrews 13: 12.
The new believer is now COMPLETE in HIM. Colossians 2: 10.
Heirs to the Holiness NOT THROUGH ANY EFFORTS OF THEIR OWN.
Romans 8: 38 and 39 now tells us IT IS FOR EVER! Salvation can not be lost, stolen, or taken away by anything or anybody! IT IS FOREVER!
When we are SAVED we have assurance that we have an ADVOCATE, Jesus Christ who will intercede for us when we sin. It is certain that we will sin because we are not yet perfect.
"My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if someone sins, we have an Advocate with the father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he himself is the propitiation for our sins" 1John 2:1f.
"The blood of Jesus, His Son cleanses us from all sin" 1John 1: 7.
"If we say we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us" 1John 1:8.
Obviously, sinless perfection is not expected of us!
Read Romans 8: 38 and 39 again and relax!
Salvation IS FOREVER!
"And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the laws of Moses" Acts 13: 39
I don`t know if mine is the best answer but I will share it with you anyway,I was an Atheist untill I was 33yrs old and on a particular day I attended a friends funeral H e was murdered and was only 30yrs old,He was a good man and loved his family and was a great humanitarian,as I stared at his coffin I confessed to myself that there was more life in his dead body than in mine,and I was very remorseful of my wasted life,and I realized that there had to be more to this crazy life than a waster like me knew,and this was the start of my returning to the God who loves me and who gave me back my life in a new way.
The example of my parents and thier friends made me want to learn more about Christianity.
There is no assurance of salvation.
Scripture teaches that one’s final salvation depends on the state of the soul at death. As Jesus himself tells us, "He who endures to the end will be saved" (Matt. 24:13; cf. 25:31–46). One who dies in the state of friendship with God (the state of grace) will go to heaven. The one who dies in a state of enmity and rebellion against God (the state of mortal sin) will go to hell.
Being a Christian is as natural to me as breathing. I attended Church and Sunday School at a young age, I accepted Christ as my Savior also at a young age. I drifted from Him in my teen/young adult years, but He never left my side. Praise God!!!!
John: Chapter 3, Verse 16....For God so Loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, shall not perish but have everlasting life.
I used my head and the real life experiences that prove to me without a doubt that God is real. If you are asking this question then you must have had an experience that left you wondering. Go with that experience and keep going no matter what anyone says to the contrary . God wont let you down.
