alcohol is a drug, is a drug, is a drug! drugs are defined as 'mind altering substances' therefore any 'drug' such as alcohol, crack, heroin, xanax, zoloft etc. changes the function of the brain. zoloft can be beneficial because it regulates serotonin production. but substances like crack, alcohol, or heroin deplete normal seratonin and dopamine production. what alcohol specifically does is causes a 'rush' or excessive production of seratonin and dopamine, which makes it difficult for the brain to produce in normal quantities, so you have to drink more to get the same effect. its called tolerance and tolerance leads to dependence.

If you ask 10 different people to define the word "drug" no doubt you will receive 10 different answers. In this case the same goes if you consult ten different dictionaries. I like to define a drug as "any chemical compound capable of altering the structure and/or function of the body". If you've ever been drunk you know very well the potential that alcohol has to effect your bodies proper functioning. Alcohol also causes drowsiness and can make one very sleepy (after a glass of wine I usually just want to take a nap).

A drug needn't be addictive in order to be considered a drug - in fact there are plenty of drugs out there that are perfectly nonaddictive. However, maybe you ment to ask "is alcohol an abusive drug" and it most certainly is. Not only can alcohol be addictive, as you pointed out, but people frequently use it in a recreational way whether they are addicted or not and whenever a drug is used recreationally (as opposed to medicinally) that can be considered drug abuse.

Alcohol is most assuredly a drug, absolutely. It is probably the most widely abused drug Ianthe world. It is intoxicating and addictive. Have you ever heard of an alcoholic? That is someone who is addicted to alcohol. Many people are addicted to it and don't even realize it. It changes brain chemistry. Some people are more prone to addiction because of family genetics.

Ethanol can be addictive, and it depends on your genetic make up. Sometimes it is extremely addictive sometimes it isn't. However it has both physio- and pyschotropic effects on the body so you can call it a drug. That would depend on your definition of "drug". Most people DO consider it to be a drug but its medicinal uses are more limited than even marijuana, so go figure.
