I'm also an African-American female and I have long thick hair. In the past few years my hair has grown from my shoulders to almost the middle of my back. Do this.....after every relaxer make sure you ALWAYS get your ends clipped (its important to get rid of your spit ends to help promote growth). Avoid using too much heat (hot combs, flats and curling irons) to your hair. Keep your hair moisturized with oil (I use doo grow). NEVER comb your hair while wet. Try to do wet sets and sit under the dryer instead of blow drying with comb and hand. Wrap your hair at night with a silk scarf because Cotton scarfs will dry your hair out. Shampoo your hair every two weeks. Always use conditioner and also do a deep condition to your hair as often as possible. Try to use Vitamin based shampoos (go for the good products, don't go cheap) All this may sound like a lot but trust me it works. I know a lot about maintaining healthy black hair (I'm not a hairdresser). OH stay a way from color! Good luck

The best products to use are organic product without harsh chemicals. Organic products will contain herbs as the only ingredients. It will not have SLES or SLS nor will it have petroleum jelly or mineral oil. You can find these products at Whole Foods if there are any close to you. Also do a search for natural hair care and there will be plenty of websites offering organic products. I recently went natural and cut all of my permed hair off. I use Kinky Curly products on my hair because it defines my natural curl pattern. There are other great products that are just the same. Even though some products are advertised for natural hair (hair that is not chemically processed), those products can still be used on hair that has been chemically processed. EX: Pooka Shea n' Olive Hair Butter. I will list the links below. Hope this helps.

Use products that contains natural herbs and vitamins and minerals. Message it into your scalp and hairline area with the balls of your fingers. this will help the blood to circulate, which stimulates the hair follicles, which promote hair growth. I found the ingredients to be in African Pride Products and Doo Gro products. Also, in Mane 'N Tail products.

try no contact hair styles such as buns, updos, french rolls, braids etc. sometimes direct exposure to the air has a drying effect for black hair. black hair needs to be constantly moisturized like when people's hair grew from jheri curls. frequent washings with good shampoos and conditioning at least 1x/week will be helpful. also try to minimize heat.

trim your ends every so often. don't do too much to your hair as far as heat...some people like to flat iron their hair or curl it with a curling iron every day....not good. you should wash your hair once a week too.

put coconut oil on your hair to make it softer, then it will have a healthy shine and grow eaily. don't braid your hair if you want to grow it well and fast.
