okay, so my husband and I took some wood paneling off the wall of our new house because there is sheetrock behind it. It was nailed up and had random glue behind it too. How do we get rid of the glue without ruining the sheetrock so we can paint it?

You will not be able to remove the glue simply or without damage.

Sheetrock is paper over plaster (actually compressed gypsum but...) the glue will remove the paper as a minimum and some of the gypsum from inside as well if it has soaked through the paper.

I would get a utility knife and cut a v-trench to remove the section that has the glue and then mud over the trench but use some fiba tape to hold the mud... let it dry, sand and fill again... sand, prime and paint...

Good luck!

It is probably Liquid Nails ~Construction adhesive~that they used to spot glue the paneling on. Get a putty knife and scrape it off. You will almost positively have some damage to the sheetrock, but it can be easily fixed:) Get some joint compound (mud) or spackling and fill in any spots where there was damage, with a regular drywall knife. Let it dry overnight, and then lightly sand & wipe away the dust. You might have to repeat the process, because it shrinks sometimes..depending on how deep the damage ends up. Prime your wall and you are ready to paint!
Good Luck!

Boy thats a tough one. I just found out that wd40 will take off adhesive from just about anything but I dont know about sheetrock. It would be something to find out..I do know it melts adhesives, But be sure to try it on a small place that will be out of sight.

I've always used this product called Goo Gone. You can get it at places like Ace Hardware. You just put a little on the adhesive, let it set if its really set in, and wipe it clean with a damp rag. I wouldn't suggest using a rag that you're very fond of. And test color fastness if necessary.

Hope this helps!

you don't. go back over it with 1/4 inch sheet rock or tear it out and put back 1/2 inch sheet rock.

try sanding it if you can, but probably the best would be to replace the sheet rock.
