Here in New Orleans, they were still using red until about the late sixties. The first time I recall the blue lights were around 1969.

In Ontario Canada, the blue light isn't used anymore. It's reserved for snow vehicles.

Though it may not say WHEN the blue light evolved, it certainly answers a lot of questions concerning the overall evolution of lighting equipment on emergency vehicles.

When us workin girls got together and protested them using a red light, cause that's ours, we called it first and that's the only way for our johns to know we open for business so they agreed to use a blue light instead of the red.

Blue can be seen farther in the dark and more people are not color blind to blue.
