Well, in a sense, all TVs are rear projection. The light that creates the picture comes from behind the glass panel. In contrast, front projection requires a projector (much like a slide projector) that creates an image on a movie screen.
Having said that, true rear projection needs space behind the screen to create the image on the front panel. CRT, DLP, and other, newer creations need space to generate the image and project it from the rear of the cabinet. LCD and plasma use more complicated magic to form an image at the surface of the front panel. Therefore, they are only a few inches deep, rather than a foot or two (or three).
So, if your TV is only a few inches deep, then it is an LCD or plasma, and NOT (by definition) a rear projection TV. If it has a deep cabinet, it is a true rear projection.
So, if your boyfriend like to play games with semantics, he is correct. But, if he likes accuracy in regard to the definitions of the products we all enjoy, then he is wrong.

No, it is not a rear projection TV. It is a flat-screen LCD. As such, it is much smaller than a rear-projection TV, which is good.
I have the 40" version of the Bravia XBR and it is the best TV I have ever seen, of any type. You will not be sorry if you get it.
