Marijuana is controlled under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 and is a Schedule I drug!
The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) was enacted into law by the Congress of the United States as Title II of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970 (21 USC 801 et sequitur). The CSA is the legal basis by which the manufacture, importation, possession, and distribution of certain drugs are regulated by the federal government of the United States. The Act also served as the national implementing legislation for the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.
The legislation created five Schedules (classifications), with varying qualifications for a drug to be included in each. Two federal departments, the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services (which includes the Food and Drug Administration) determine which drugs are added or removed from the various schedules, though the statute passed by Congress created the initial listing. Classification decisions are required to be made on the criteria of potential for abuse, accepted medical use in the United States, and potential for addiction.
The Department of Justice is also the executive agency in charge of federal law enforcement. State governments also regulate certain drugs not controlled at the federal level.

It was a stamp act. History channel did a special on it a while back apparently to sell marijuana you have to have a special stamp from the US government like the stamp on the top of a pack of smokes.
However the Government didn't publish the stamps so it's illegal to sell marijuana by default. Later laws were passed against growing it.
I know a woman who smoked weed daily since she was 16 she's now in her 30's and is sterile because she smoked so much....like a nicklebag a day.

You can blame our great grand parents for this. In the late 1800's and early 1900's addiction to opium based drugs was very high in the United States. Drugs weren't illegal and people could get almost anything they wanted.
The percentage of people hooked on drugs was very high. The government had to take action and started banning recreational drugs. Marijuana was included in the recreational drugs made illegal.
I don't see the government making recreational drugs legal any time soon.

Marijuana isn't unlawful because of the fact it gets you intoxicated or is a "gateway drug", alcohol does the comparable element and in a lots worse and addictive way. If marijuana develop into legalized, hemp (the non-narcotic little sister of MJ) might additionally might desire to be legalized. Hemp may well be utilized for each little thing from paper, to nutrition, to gas. whilst it would be a stretch to declare that hemp might wipe out the petroleum agencies; it would with out doubt take gross sales from their wallet. As those days as WWII, the U.S. government inspired farmers to strengthen hemp to help interior the 'conflict attempt'. President George Washington grew hemp, as did many different founding fathers and U.S. statesmen. Do a information superhighway seek for hemp for an in intensity look on the myriad of makes use of for this marvelous plant. upload to this the stigma that the political and non secular overlords have placed upon marijuana and you will see why that is going to proceed to be a no-no for it sluggish to return. thankfully, there are some glimmers of wish being suggested interior the media often times contained in this variety of scientific marijuana and private use rules. sometime my buddy. sometime.

becouse they are very small minded and refuse to see the bigger picture, and they did not learn anything from the bootlegging period.
if you legalise drugs and taking it out of the criminal world and have governements control
the producing and distributation via the pharmacies on a legal basis, people wont be
curious anymore, and it will reduce the use.
there is no way, that this war om drugs will ever
be succesfull becouse there is to much money
involved.
10% of the worldtrade is drugs, the maffias and
cartels are only getting more powerfull, also the dea dont want it to be legal, becouse than they are losing there jobs.
in holland mariuana/hash is more or less legal
and there are no mayor problems at all.
only when there is politics involved like in afghanistan, its oke for the farmers to produce opium. ect

Because back around the time of prohibition, our forefathers determined that cannabis was indeed a drug, as was cocaine, (which both could be bought and sold over the counter at the time), and therefore needed to be regulated.

It is a controlled substance because it affects the health of those who use it, dangerously impairs thought processes, and its long term effects on memory and reasoning abilities are detrimental to our society. And contrary to what the NORML zoners would have you believe. It IS a gateway drug, because once you convince yourself that there is nothing wrong with one illegal substance, the chances of you accepting the use of others is increased. Not everyone, but enough to have a negative impact on our communities. And those other drugs breed violent gangbangers, turn our girls into prostitutes to support their habits, and greatly increase the burden on our health care system.

In the 70's Nixon needed a way to curb student and liberal demonstrations against him so they made it legal to put any drug on a list created by his pals and no law was needed to pass to make any drug illegal. He needed marijuana on the list to harass and jail his political critics. It's been that way ever since.
KC V explains how it works better than I could.
