I think it's outrageous that question is even asked. Will they deny your application if you say that you can speak in tongues or that you believe in the power of prayers? I can understand if you said I believe in strapping on a bomb and blowing myself and others up, but how many people would put that down? This question should be illegal and that's probably why it's worded the way it is, without mentioning religion. Just say no.

May God Bless you.

It's a silly question. Since everyone on the planet has a doctrinal view and most people will emphasize their view with various degrees of passion in their daily chatter.

But, interestingly, what this questions reveals is the deeply held conviction of the person(s) who framed the question. The word 'overemphasized' suggests that the questioner has in mind some kind of measurement or scale by which emphasis is rated as 'over' or 'under'. As if there is an empirical watermark indicating what a 'normal' emphasis is.

A highly suspect application form question written by highly prejudicial people and I would ignore it.

What they are wanting to know is if you have any speciific beliefs in your own personal Christianity that you empasize over others. For instance. Perhaps you beleive the bible is literal and 100% accurate and that is exceedingly importantr to you. Perhaps you beleive in speaking in tongues and that is very important. So on and so on on.

For example, I am not of the opinion that Homosexuals are any worse sinners than anyone else and I am very vocal about that, and I am not even gay. But I still beleive it is not a big deal to be and I preach that when i preach of tolerance.

You might believe the opposite and beleive it strongly.

My wife believes that adam and Eve existed, while I think that is an allegorical tale representing man gaining more knowledge, etc.

If it is an evangelical College, they many want to know if you have strong convictions (ie: Holiness, Nazarene, Baptist) If it is mainstream Christian ( ie: Episcopal, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ), they may want to know that you don't or at least are consistent with mainstream doctrines.

Good luck on your admission.

The term "doctrine" is simply established views. Usually it is something that says, "this is what is true, and this is what you should do" about a given subject.

With an academic institution, they are interested in any particularly strong views on things that you may posess, either religiously, politically, or in general, morally, because they are concerned with the impact you may have on their student body. They are also concerned with the impact you may have in the outside world as an alumni bearing their school name (thus representing their school's values in the real world).

Basically, it is a nice way of asking you to sell your moral character to them, and prove you would not only enrich their academic environment, but do their institution's name justice in the real world post-education.

For those who are more specifically concerned with the religious aspect:

When applied to a specific religion, "doctrine" is often considered "sacred" and consecrated by higher spiritual powers (such as "God"), and in the case of Biblical faith, referred to as "gospel".

Are you an extremist in any way? If you are not, then put "no" for the answer. If you are an extremist, ignore the question and put "no," because you shouldn't have a label going into college or be denied entrance for any particular belief.

Overemphasised doctrinal views is gobbledygook-it just means do you have strong religious convictions. Why they don't just use plain English I don't know.
