We recently booked our honeymoon at the Grand Cayman Mariott Beach Resort. (Our family donated the Mariott Rewards Points) We have been worried about the risk of hurricaines, as well as summer weather. Also does anyone know if there would be things not offered in June as it is considered an off season. Also- I have been to several websites looking for the exchange rate from USD to Cayman Dollars. I have gotten various rates. Can someone who has been there recent or lives there help. Also, is there anything that we must take with us- as I am sure there are some things easy to find in the US that might be difficult to find there. Thanks so much.

Daff73 has given you a pretty good answer although I don't know about the beach in Rum Point being better... it is good but that's a matter of preference really. It's shallow for a farther distance out than Seven Mile Beach and can be a lot of fun for a group or a couple and gives the feeling of being somewhere secluded.

You're going to be in a good spot. The quality of the beach at the Marriott B.R. is great. Go to the beach at night, just the two of you. They stack the lounge chairs after dark so grab one and move it a few feet to a darkened section of the beach for some seaside smootching-- if you're brave, skirt + imagination. ;-)

Across the street you have Coconut Joe's, a pretty good American/Island style restaurant/bar. There's also Aqua Beach restaurant and lounge, with Next Level night club in the adjoining building, Triple Crown English pub (good curry Monday nights and not bad otherwise,) Cimboco restaurant (good food + atmosphere) in the Marquis complex, all right there across the street. Oh, and also if you want to rent a car, right across the street from the hotel next to Coconut Joe's is a second Andy's rent a car (the first being at the airport). I recommend Andy's in general, because they tend to be slightly cheaper than the others, esp. the ones by the airport.

Don't worry about hurricanes too much. If there is one it more than likely will be small in June. If it's heading toward the island it will normally be coming from the direction of Jamaica and Jamaica's mountains will knock it down to just mostly rain or miss Cayman completely. The bigger hurricanes, if they form at all, are almost always in Sept. (Ivan 2004, Gilbert 1988.) Don't listen to anyone, esp. someone who Sounds like they know what they're talking about, saying the island is damaged from Hurricane Ivan; the island has recovered for a while now and is better than ever.

If you need it, (i.e. if you are of a complexion that burns,) bring good quality, waterproof SPF30 and avoid prolonged time in the sun between 10-2pm. I find that Coppertone continuous spray works well. Bring two bottles if you're coming for a week; remember to pack them, not not put them in your carry-on. Bring any prescriptions, eyeglasses if necessary, (condoms if you use them. They will have some at certain stores, but the exact type you want may not be available or may seem expensive, or not available on Sundays.) Most stores are closed on Sundays.

You should explore the island and don't worry too much about getting lost in a bad part of town or anything. There's almost no such thing. Go to the Turtle Farm and Stingray City. Go to Hell. (Hey, it's a place, not a slam!) Rent masks, snorkles and fins and go snorkling off of Eden Rock near town. Go during calm weather, no later than 4:30pm for max. viewing/ light effect. Wear a light t-shirt if your back may get burned.

The exchange rate for US cash to CI cash is us$1.25 = ci$1.00. This is a fixed rate and doesn't fluctuate. It's the same for credit cards.

Hope you two have a great trip! I'll add more if you need it, just edit your question accordingly.

EDIT

I think Caicos Turkey is talking about U.S. cheques to C.I. or bank only transactions. It will be us$1.25 = ci$1.00 for you. No, you probably can't cash a personal cheque from the States to save a few cents, nice try though!

There won't be anything that spectacular for the Queen's B-day. Just a little parade, which could be fun if you happen to be on island for the June 18th holiday Monday, but don't change your schedule for it or anything. The two really good celebrations are Batabano in early May, or Pirates Week now in early to mid Nov.

hi there. I have been to the Caymans, my favorite island in the Caribbean. It is more expensive there than most other islands (as I have been to many of the Caribbean islands - hopelessly addicted!). They take American dollars. The average meal for two people is about $50 for a nice restaurant. Your hotel is on 7-mile beach in Georgetown. There is lots of nice shopping at the port in Georgetown. The Hard Rock Cafe is located there and is a great place to have lunch. If you are renting a car (which is kind of fun since they drive on the left-side of the road). Be sure to go to the other side of the island to Rum Point Beach. It's nicer than 7-mile and not as many people. You can take tours from there to Stingray city and swim with the Stingrays. It is great fun. The water is so warm and the people are very friendly. Also, when you are over at Rum Point Beach take the road that forks to the right on your way back right after you leave the parking lot - it'll take you to Kaibo Kai Beach Bar and Restaurant. Have a meal there, they are so wonderful. Daniel is the owner and he will make you feel like you are the only ones there. It is basically in a hut-type setting on the beach with beautiful views. A great experience and once again not that crowded since people don't really know its there. We loved it so much in the Caymans that we nearly moved there. I don't think the hurricanes really start until after June, so I think you'll be safe. Purchase some travel insurance though, it is relatively cheap just in case.

The Cayman dollar is pinned to the US dollar and there are $1.20 US dollars to the Cayman dollar. Either can be used on the Island. There is some risk of hurricanes in June, but it is slight as far as Grand Cayman is concerned: statistically hurricanes have struck later on in the season, the biggest on record being Hurricane Ivan on the night of 11 September 2003. There are two major supermarkets within easy striking distance of where you will be staying (Fosters and Kirks), which you will find amazingly well stocked. Unless you have some special requirements and are worried about not being able to find precisely what you want there, why load up unnecessarily? But be prepared for higher prices than you're used to. Everything will be in full swing in June: in fact, if you're there at the right time, you will be there for the Queen's Birthday celebrations, which are great fun. Best wishes for the wedding and enjoy Grand Cayman!

the climate there is noticeably much continually suited. different than possibly typhoon season haha this is often very hott inspite of the shown fact that yet this is anticipated. The water is somewhat gentle besides. I somewhat have traveled to 6 islands interior the caribbean and Grand Cayman has been my 2d sought after.
