There are a couple of ways.
1. Look up their service provider online. I know that Sprint and Verizon offer sending text messages to their customers from the website.
2. Most, if not all can be sent as an email. For example, T-Mobile's customers use: the full 10 digit number @tmomail.net. ex: 3455556789@tmomail.net. You can search on the company's website to find the domain address.

There are many different softwares you can use. Just about any chat software out there can send text messages. A lot depends on what company your friends' cell phone is on. Some companies charge their clients for text messaging. So you may find one and send free messages from your end - but they have to pay to retreive them.
Look into that aspect first.

Two ways I can think of:

1. www.sms.ac - send an SMS anywhere in the world for free
2. Ask you friend to login to Yahoo Messenger (or other IM services) using their cell phone. Then, any IM message you send them goes to them as an SMS.

Enjoy!!

Many if not all wireless carriers allow e-mail to be sent and received on the cellphone, as TXT MSG. For example, if your Verizon number is 123 456 7890, then you can simply e-mail 1234567890@vtext.com. Other companies have similar e-mail address aliases. This is by far the most convenient way.

You can try www.sms.ac I know they have limited free SMS that you can send on daily basis.

Or else....try www.skype.com. They charge a very minimal cost for sending SMS. But you would need to register and buy credit.
