I made chili in a crock pot and forgot to put it in the refrigerator. It sat overnight (not turned on) and I hope it's okay because it is a LOT of chili! There's chicken in it, not beef. Would it be safe to reheat and eat? I hope so...thank you for the help!

I know this probably will get me into trouble - but I do that all the time - but with beef, not chicken.

I make a HUGE pot of chili, turn it off before bed, and usually in the morning it's still warm. I know the FDA and a lot of people would think this is not good - but I like to let my food cool down before putting it into the fridge. I don't want the heat from the food to warm up everything else in my fridge - and trust me, it's happened. I once put a crock pot full of soup in the fridge, and it melted my butter.

I say it's going to be ok to eat. This is cooked chicken after all, not quite the same thing as raw. I confess I'm guilty of the same thing on occasion, forget to to put leftover food in the fridge right away and I've never gotten sick from something like chili.

I absolutely would NOT eat it. Chicken has a shelf life of about 2-4 hours after cooked and not refrigerated. I wouldn't risk it...

Absolutely not!!!

The bacteria that grew in there is a plenty I'm sure.

Toss it out.

I might at that you can't see bacteria.. so even if it looks okay it's not. Also it doesn't matter if the food is cooked it will still be bad.

You should never eat anything that has been sitting at room temperature for more than a few hours! This is especially true when you are using chicken!!

Unfortunately no, don't eat it. It's been in the temperature danger zone far too long. (Up to 4 hours, which includes prep time). I wouldn't risk it, especially with chicken.

If the kept it covered and the room temperature is cold.. then it should be ok. But make sure you reheat it very well just for safety reasons.

With food poisoning as common as it is today I would not take any chances. Salmonela can be very serious.

Look at it and make sure that it looks fine, if not, then DONT eat it. Depending on how it looks you can may be able to eat it.
