The first night, she just felt like it was heartburn and spit it out. Then, the following night, she tried it again and got severe burning in mouth and throat, then had diarrhea and nausea. She began shaking uncontrollably all over her body. About 30 minutes later, it was all gone. Anyone hear of anything like this or know what the culprit could be?

She's allergic to something in the gum.

So obviously don't let her chew it anymore.

If she does "by accident" then you can counter the effects somewhat by giving her Benadryl.

It sounds like she's allergic to the red dye - not the gum itself. This is actually a common allergy. Does it contain red #3? I don't have a pack laying around to look at it. Does she have this reaction after eating other food dyed red, such as cupcake icing? Icing usually doesn't require ALOT of dye, so she may not have as severe of a reaction. Big Red makes my mouth kind of numb from the cinnimon, but my mouth never really burned from it, even when I was a kid. A friend of mine has a little girl that will experience the same symptoms - they have to read the ingredients of everything to make sure there's no red dye in it or she has the same burning/shaking experience.

not a doctor, but, having said that...
the gum is spicey, I get sick from chewing any gum, my stomache produces too much bile(it is fooled into thhinking food is coming)...it causes nausea and diarrhea for me too and I am an adult, but it always has. I be t your daughter is thin, probably has a very productive and perhaps over active metabolism and her stomache produces maybe alittle more bile than the next persons...The shaking is possibly because she has not been able to absorb any calories so she is week after the event,,,,I would keeep her away from chewing gum....good luck...hope it helps...

What's in the gum? Any of the ingredients could be the culprit. The burning sounds like maybe the cinnamon, but without knowing ALL the ingredients I can't give you a very educated guess. I would call her doctor at once! This kind of reaction is anaphylactic and she needs to be allergy tested and carry an Epi-Pen.

Many people (predominantly children) have a wide range of reactions to Red Dye no. 40

It's actually not classified under food allergies, but is considered a food "intolerance". It produces horrible symptoms nonetheless.

Have your daughter tested for allergies, she may need to avoid other foods such as gummi bears, fruit bars, etc.
Until you have her tested, it would be wise to avoid giving her any foods that have "artificial colour" listed on the label.

Oh dear, that's not pleasant!

It sounds like your daughter had better avoid the gum. There are several possible culprits there. I can't tell which is most likely without a package to read the ingredient list from.

Yes! I have heard of this. It was a special report by a doctor on TV. I would suggest she not chew that gum...or any kind like that. It can be very seruous(sounds like it already was). If she should have that kind of reaction...take her to the doctor or ER ASAP!!

Either the flavouring or the red dye. Bring her to an allergist with a pack of big red in tow to determine what it is...

and don't let her have any more

Put an ice cube in your mouth or some really cold water. You could also try Advil aspirin.
