Light tanning is ok. And as it happens required for our health. But not "baking".

The best site with information to answer your question.....

the Mayo clinic's website on sun-damage
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sun-damage/HQ01462

But the site below is somewhat briefer...(Albeit less detailed.)

Also...2006 American Academy of Dermatology found at...
http://www.aad.org/public/Publications/pamphlets/DarkerSideTanning.htm

Lists some relevant facts....I highlighted a few below.....

"People have associated a suntan with good health and vitality. Vitamin D is necessary, but just a small amount of sunlight is needed for the body to manufacture it. It does not require a suntan!"

"Melanoma(form of skin cancer), with a suspected link to UVA exposure, is fatal if not detected early"

"Skin aging and cancer are delayed effects that show up many years after the exposure. Unfortunately, since the damage is not immediately visible, young people are often unaware of the dangers of tanning."

"Plan your outdoor activities to avoid the sun's strongest rays. As a rule, avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m."

I hope this information helps you in your life's journey.

NO especially out door tanning, UV rays cause cancer.

For indoor tanning in a salon, the rays break down collagen in the skin causing it to prematurely loose elasticity. So you will start to wrinkle and sag at an Early age.

the safest way to obtain the tanned took is to have either a spry tan or to use a tanning cream, this dyes the skin as opposed to bringing out your natural melatonin to darken the skin.

I was a manager in a tanning salon, this is a 2 sided answer. No for your skin and cancer its not good for you. On the other hand I have gone tanning still sometimes and mentally it seems to help. I dont know if you get a vitamin source like vit.d or what but especially in the winter its good for your emotional state. In some cases like psoriasis it is recomended.

Sun or artificial sun exposure is associated with skin aging and increased risk of skin cancer. Nearly all skin cancer is caused by sun exposure. However, sun exposure does provide for vitamin D conversion which is not all bad.

No. Tanning exposes your skin to harmful rays.
