PDF stands for Portable Document Format, and is an open file format created and controlled by Adobe Systems. You have to have Adobe Reader, a free part of Adobe Acrobat, to read PDF files, or you have to have one of the free readers like Foxit Reader. You cannot change or edit the documents, you can only read and print them.

It was created by a company called Adobe and its a format that can be read by a Free Adobe Acrobat Reader. The following link is to download the latest version of Acrobat Reader

Quite a long time ago people used different pieces of software to create documents. It was fairly difficult to hand a document created on PC and then viewed on Apple computer and more importantly even if it was converted it never retained the same look and feel of the document. Thus Adobe created Adobe Acrobat which created PDF files that were read on Linux, PC, Apple etc w/o specialized software and you get to see the document as it was originally intended to be displayed.
The Adobe Acrobat Reader does not create PDFs it simply reads and displays the document. However, there are software in the market some free and some not free that can create PDFs. Adobe sells one called Acrobat which is the most sophisticated PDF maker in the market.

May I add to Lucee:
After you download a small, free-to-all program called Adobe Reader, you can download and read only PDF files. However, you can not only print them, you can save them to disk. After that, if you purchase PDF Converter, you can convert it to a Word document.
