There is a saying that "Like Father, Like Son."
The Concept of Jesus Christ helps us to view what truly the Father God is
The Father has the same image of the Son.. Therefore we also give our prayer to the Son Jesus
Whereas. Jesus sacrificed his life for us to meet with the Father in Heaven.
that's the importance of the Cross, I think...

Jesus says to not pray to Him (the man) but to Him (the God). If you can discern the difference and understand, then you are on the right track.
Remember, at the time that Jesus said all He said, not everyone (VERY few, in fact) knew who He ~really~ was.

Jesus is the bridge between man and God, being God in the flesh that came to fill the great divide.
You pray to God because we are supposed to live IN Christ.

During the time of Jesus' incarnation - that is while he was walking physically on the earth - prayer was directed to His Father who was still in heaven. Now that Jesus has returned to heaven also, it is permissable to address prayer to him also. After all, they are both just as much "God" as the other.

The Bible tells us to pray to the Father in Jesus' name. I don't think there's anything wrong with praying to Jesus, though. Sometimes when I'm worshipping, I'll say something like, "Thank You, Jesus, for dying for my sins, thank You for loving me, I can never thank You enough for saving me and paying for my sins on the cross."

When you pray to the Father, you are praying to Jesus Christ. He also intercedes for us. We pray "in the Name of Jesus", since it is through our covenant relationship in that Name that grants us access to the throne of God.
