Christians fast as a matter of purification. It is not specific to any denomination. Catholics, baptists, methoidists, lutherans, etc., all try to live in the pattern of Christ. Christ fasted. So do we.

What I find curious is that your co-worker told you. Fasting is supposed to be a private thing, that you tell nobody about. God knows, and rewards you for your sacrifice. When you tell others, the praise you get from them is all the reward you get.

We should all fast. Is there something in your life that you just cannot get an answer to? Are you in need of something that seems to be just out of reach?Do want a closer relationship with God?
If you said yes to just one of these questions then study up on fasting, and ask God what type and how long of a fast you should do.
If you attend a church that teaches against fasting then you need to find a church that teaches the Bible, not whatever book they are using.

Firstly, the bible teaches that when a man fasts, he fasts to God. Why did your friend tell you about his fasting? To show off? Then he has received his reward and his fasting is meaningless.

Secondly, when you fast for your church it must mean the church needs some big help from God, otherwise, the man should be fasting to cultivate his own spirit. Did he tell you what is wrong?

Any Christian can fast as the Lord leads. There are different fasts, total fasts, nothing but water, and partial fasts , which could be any variation of denying yourself something you like to eat or drink.

Any Christian that wants to can fast. It's not restricted to any one sect or denomination. Fasting is about cleansing the body and the soul in an effort to show God how serious you are about an honest, sincere need in your life.

My personal belief is that there are no real Christians, yet. to follow someone, one must interpret them correctly. My belief is that the Bible has not been successfully translated into modern English, yet.
According to my studies, a fast is the truest form of anonymous donation, and everyone knows that is a GOOD thing. the faster doesn't know the recipient and vice versa.

That's a long one....but - I've known Christians of all denominations who fast....I do not know the significance of "21 days"

I could be mistaken; but I do not see it as a specific 'denominational' thing. It is possibly what I have heard called a 'Daniel fast' (book of Daniel). I heard about it via a TV evangelist currently based in Georgia (Jentzen Franklin).
