There are different types of depression
Some may last only couple of years.
Some are seasonal.
You need to see a psychiatrist and be evaluated which may take some time, you may be put on some medication. This may help and your depression eased.
There is stronger types such as bi-polar and there are different types of that.
I have bi-polar #2 I will live with it for the rest of my life there is no cure I am on meds have been since 1995.

Which ever you have support is the best thing to have
But some do not believe there is such a thing as depression

It is so easy for others to say SNAP OUT OF IT but they are not living in that depressed state easy to say hard to do.
You do not know how it feels unless you have lived a day as a depressed person on a bad day

Most of us are suffering from depression of varying degrees. I can suggest that a depressed person should follow the following schedule:
1. First of all, take a pen & paper and write down the reasons, which are causing depression.
2. Sort out the factors in two-three categories like potential, mediocre and small in nature causing depression.
3. One will be surprised to find that there is nothing like potential factors in his life which cause depression.
4. He will discover that it is his attitude, behaviour, environment, perception etc that cause depression.
5. One must adopt adopt positive. There is one old adage - "Nazariya Badal do, nazare badal jayenge" - Meaning by changing your perspective, scenes will change.
6. One should remain in the company of persons - who are positive, confident, full of enthusiasm and take the small worries of life for granted.
Guru Nanak Dev ji had rightly said that "Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar".
7. If one looks around, he will find that everyone is having some problem or other but one should not carry the burden of that all through his life.
8. So be don't worry and be happy.
9. Never take anti-depressants as they are addictive and harmful. Rather go for Prayanama etc.

(I am manic-depressive and have much experience in this and have research as best a non-doctor can.)

There are basically two forms of what is termed "depression". One is the grief, or fear and/or suppressed anger based on what we experience in life (long-term grief can be horrible). The other is biologically-induced depression which is caused by insufficient production of certain aminos in the brain. The emotional symptoms of both are quite similar, but with the biological type there are more symptoms: physical pain, lethargy (often to not being able to move at all), and weakness, as well as more than that disinterested, sad feeling of situational depression--a feeling like your personality or "soul" have been forcibly ripped from you and exist no more. I am not sure of the proper help for the first kind except living through it and letting out one's feelings and getting good advice from a good shrink or a good guru, but the second demands medical attention with an appropriate drug, either an antidepressant or lamotrigene (an anti-epilepsy drug approved as a drug for bipolar depression), or others that I might not know about. If one chooses to "live it out" in either, but mostly in the second type, suicide or some form of self violence or destruction of one's goals are sure to come. Pain is pain, no matter what the cause, and love, good medicine, and attention to the matter are the only real "cures". If this is you you are asking about, please get some help, and best wishes to you. If this is for someone else, demand they get help, or get help for them against their will ("intervention") and take it from there, and always let them know you care. Depression (or other mental problems) are not indicators of character but of human pain and of biological differences.

I too suffer from depression, mine started after i had my daughter age 3.I tortured myself over my feelings, which ranged from denial.happiness and suicidal thoughts, fortunatly i had a great health visitor who urged me to see my gp,i am not ashamed to tell anyone i stayed on a psychiatric ward for a few days.I needed it as did my family.I was refered to a psychologist and have just finished 2 years of therapy. For me this helped as i couldn't turn to anyone as i felt deep shame.I am now much better, but not cured by any means.
I celebrate each new day and enjoy small things that i had taken for granted. My daughter is an absolute joy,i am so glad i sought help as she might not have had a mummy.
Talk to someone you can trust, perhaps they will come with you if you can find the courage to see a g.p.
Just take one day at a time, drink and eat sensibly and most inportantly get lots of rest.
I hope you do recover my friend.

Depression can be the result of a condition called hypoglycemia. Check out www.hufa.org for some info. If the depression is due to this low blood sugar condition, eating to level blood sugar levels will assist in handling the depression.

It is very difficult. You have to drag yourself out of bed. List your goals and chores at night for the next day. Tape the list to your mirror. When you get up when you look at your list you will see yourself and say I will do this today. Learn to motivate yourself. This is what I have to do. I have a depression problem and found that pills do not help. You can do it. Smile and GOOD LUCK.
