a lot of time the info you read on line is contradicting and sometimes people would rather get information from people who have actually encountered the same thing.

Some of the questions that people ask can be answered by internet searches or asking their doctors, if they want a vague answer that may have lots of different outcomes. Like the side effects to a certain medication. By posting questions on the internet they can recieve more individualized feedback based on other peoples experiences.
Other questions that are asked that are pertaining to mental health, like the characteristics of depression or bipolor disorder, etc, allow people to get feedback about thier concerns. Again it is possible to simple see a perfessional on these matters. However because of factors like fear, location, schedule, and cost many people are not able to see a doctor or theapist.
Then there are other factors. It can be comforting for some people to realize that other people have experienced the same situations that they have or have the same feelings. A depressed person may have trouble seeking help because they feel alone and that no one else in the world could possible understand what they are going through. A site like this can help a person like that understand that many people experience similar problems.
There are also people like me. I do not post questions often, but I do like to answer them. It helps me to think that I am helping in some small way. It helps me to feel a little better about myself.

This site is more helpful to make a connection with someone who has similar interests as you and things like that. Like, being this is the Mental Illness section, sure, someone can go ahead and read the deffinition of Schizophrenia online, but that doesn't mean they'll know what it's like to have it or to know someone that does. The "Answers" given here are more like support and advice, which you can't always get from other sites. Maybe you think someone's question is stupid and they might be lazy for asking it, but to them, they are just trying to find out how other people react to certain issues.

I think they have tried but they either don't have the education or experience to help themselves, they don't have a close friend they can talk to, and this site is probably a relatively safe, cost-effective way for them to go before making a decision to go to a professional about their problems.
I think too, sometimes when someone else on here (or their friends or family members) have gone through similar experiences, that seems to help the people asking the questions. And that is something you would not necessarily get from a visit to your local psychologist or counselor or social worker.

It is much more fun to share. When everybody would find out everything for themself, why would yahoo put up a site like this?
It also gives others the pleasure to pose with their wisdom. Classical Win-Win-Situation.
And apart from that, did you ever have a good laugh about some stupid answers (and questions)?

They probably do but would like to hear a few other opinions. It is good to keep an open mind and see how others may look at the same issues.

Some people are inquisitive, or already know the answer but want other's opinions. I think these answer boards are really used to garner others' opinions about matters that most of us already know how to address.
