Fear is the worst part of it all, actually its probably more anxiety than anything else, not knowing what to expect. I WAS scared about going to the dentist, but after everything was done, I think back now and say to myself "I was worried about that, that wasn't too bad". Just make an appt. and make yourself do it, or you can suffer until you do. Good Luck.

Are all of your teeth pulled? If not why don't you repair them?
Get them crowned. Dentures should be a last resort.
There are Dentists that will sedate you for major work.
One suggestion to help with the pain is to swish with Hydrogen Peroxide 3 times a day. It is very inexpensive and at the drug store. It will heal your gums and reduce or eliminate the pain.
Pain does not come from the teeth but from the nerve in the root.
So many times the painful tooth or teeth can be repaired and you can keep your teeth.
I have mediocre teeth, (twelve crowns) but thanks to the Hydrogen Peroxide for 41 years, I have fabulous and healthy gums. Please give this a try. It will taste slightly peculiar and it bubbles, swish 30 seconds to a minute and spit out. Don't accidentally swallow it.
After having a front upper crown replaced, I had discomfort (mild pain) fun behind my nose to the corner of my eye. By using the Peroxide a few times a day I completely healed it and it is now totally healed and fine.
Find a "Gentle" Dentist after you get your gums healthy and make an appointment for an evaluation. Maybe you do not need as much work as you think.
My father pulled his out of rebellion and lived his last 30 years just looking toothless and ridiculous because he refused to wear his dentures.
Appearance is EXTREMELY important. Good Luck.

Ask a trusted person to go with you. There is sedation dentistry and other methods to make you feel better while you are there.
My Grandmother died 14 years ago. She was a beautiful person, she could have been even more beautiful had she gotten dentures. She like you was afraid of the dentist and refused to go despite the fact her teeth were causing so much pain. When she was in her 20's an abscessed tooth pulled, it caused so much pain that she vowed never to return to any dentist. She unfortunately kept that vow. My Mom and Aunt tried to talk her into going. The result she stopped talking to my Mom and Aunt for 3 years. She allowed the fear to control her. She could only eat soft foods, or ones dunked in broth or milk.
Because healthy teeth are so important to a healthy body, she died the young age of 70. I do not doubt for a moment that had she gotten dentures, she may have lived a lot longer-maybe even still alive.
Don't put this off any longer. Make an appointment with a dentist to consult with him/her. He/she should put you at ease.
Good Luck. Thinking you.

Dentures do not suck unless you do not have proper fit. They have to be better than the pain you are having. Some people are not acceptable to dentures and therefore cannot accept them, nor the patience to get use to them.
Root canals are not guaranteed
Implants are not guarnteed
Bridges break
Find a dentist who deals who dental phobia, they will understand
About 32 million Americans wear dentures
You may not need dentures.

I to do not like going to the dentist, but you must go. Let the dentist know about your fear, I did, they are extremely gentle. The mouth is an open organ and many other diseases can occur if not treated properly. Patty just go, its not as bad as you think, come on you can do it. Just think how great you will look with a new set of white teeth. GL =)

You have gotten a lot of good answers already. But I will add my 2 cents. First off, do you know of anyone that knows how to read the Original Farmer's Almanac? In that little book, it tells when you should have surgery.....it all goes by the sign of the moon. Don't laugh! My dad does this all the time. Four days before his 91st birthday, he had all his teeth pulled and got dentures. No pain...and healed rather quickly.
As far as the pain...do you know of a good hypnotist? They could help so much in calming your fears.
Good luck....and wish you a wonderful recovery.

Technology has come a long way. I had two impacted wisdom teeth partially sawed out of my jaw with just Novocaine. It didn't hurt a bit. (until later, then...need cold packs)
Some dentist's have a TV mounted on the ceiling so you can watch a movie, some have headsets so you can listen to music.
You might just have them knock you out so you don't have to worry about it. Find a dentist that practices gentle dentistry.

don't get scared of the dentist.not all dental treatments result in pain.if you need dentures without any tooth to be extracted(if the teeth are in a good position) then u'll have no pain at all.i have constructed dentures 4 my patients who did'nt have any teeth to be extracted , they did not feel any pain and yes they were really happy to know that dental treatments are'nt that scary!!!!!!

Let them know how scared you are and they can give you (happy gas) this will help with your nervousness. It makes it easier to cope with sitting in the chair.
