The Afterlife is just a waiting place before taking on a new life. Each life is important though, as its what our souls get from the life that matters.

Because the afterlife depends on the current life. In this life people face a lot of pain; physical and mental. Many religious people are more agnostic than religious anyway. A goal in religion is to be "not of this world" - that is unaffected and not participating in the sleazy politics of this world. Most ARE affected by these things, and go to church "just in case".

Not all religous folks are about the after life.
Myself for instance. I'm interested in everlasting life. Not necessarily dying from this life, but living forever, peacefully, on a paradise earth.
Psalms 37:9-11 says the wicked will be destroyed and the righteous will gain life on the earth.
But to gain that you have to follow command at John 17:3 where it states we have to gain an accurate knowledge of Jesus and God before attaining everlasting life.
So you have to focus on living according to God's will now, if you want to benefit later.

Actually, you are correct! We Christians are supposed to live this life FOR the next. We should not care about the things in this life, such as money or material goods. We should care about loving our God and each other.
This is like the story of the ant and the grasshopper.

This is a good question. Part of the answer lies in the fact that,{speaking as a Christian}, we often neglect to focus on that which really matters. Though we are instructed to set our hope firmly on the salvation that is to be revealed, we are often no more than children preoccupied with the box and ribbons and never really getting to know the gift.

The NewTestament tells us what to do in this life so that we might be able to attain a place in Heaven with HIM. This life is in preparation for the next. GOD has given this opportunity to be a part of HIS KINGDOM. Read, study, and obey HIS BOOK, the BIBLE! Have a great day.

You assume you can't care about both?
Most religions have some amount of teaching that what we do in this world determines what the afterlife will be like.
