If we should be like God, then why do you (some of you) say that I belong to some wacked out religion when you find out that Mormons believe that some people will eventually become gods?

To me it seems like the next logical step. Yes it will take a long time, but first you become like God (who is perfect in every way), then, just as He is now ruler over this planet, you become like Him in that way too.

With God all things are possible. It certainly will not happen while we are alive, but when you think of the vastness of eternity, and how short a time we are here on earth, isn't it possible that something MIGHT happen that we can't experience or even fathom while here on earth?

I don't pretend to think that I will/whoever will become perfect WITHOUT Christ. It is by Him and His Atonement that I even have a chance at perfection. But AFTER that, once everyone is judged and received their eternal reward, some (in my opinion, like the prophets) will receive godhood. It doesn't mean that they will take the place of our God - no one could. It doesn't mean that you or anyone else will be asked to worship them rather than God. It doesn't mean that they will be the sacrifice for sin on their planet as Jesus was on ours. It just means that they will be allowed to create life spiritually. Here in this world we can create life physically, but we still can't create life spiritually.

I'm going to try to give my best answer here. I was a member of your church for a couple years, and I understand some of the theology.
I want to point out that Lucifer was cast out of heaven for having similar beliefs. He challenged God. He wanted the glory - He wanted to be God. All throughout the Bible, it is evidently clear that ALL glory belongs to God ALONE.
The only reason we are able to come into God's kingdom is because of Jesus. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no man comes to the Father but by him. Without Jesus' precious blood, we would be nothing but sinners lost in our sins.
The big doctrinal difference that I think it all comes down to - the LDS church believes human souls can eventually acheive becoming creators, create their own worlds, of which they will be the god. Aside from the fact that there is no Biblical backing to this, it is opposed to the fact that ALL glory belongs to God alone. If, in our heavenly state, we are able to become as gods, then why did God have to send His "only begotten" Son to redeem the world? If your doctrine is correct, wouldn't some other glorified heavenly person have been able to do it?
It simply doesn't have Biblical backing. The overwhelming evidence in the Bible is that all glory belongs to the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. With that said, I firmly believe, based on sound Biblical doctrine, the only thing I'm going to think about "creating" in heaven is a joyful noise unto my God & Savior.

First, because there is only one God. If YOU become a god, then who do I worship - you or the OTHER God? If your answer is "the other God," then you aren't much of a god, are you? And if your answer is "you," then go re-read that First Commandment.

Second, being "like Jesus" doesn't mean BECOMING Jesus. I would like to be "like Walter Payton" in his work ethic, his commitment to his family, team, and community, his generosity, and his humility. But does that mean that - eventually, and it would take an extreeeeeeeemely long time - I will become the NFL's career yardage rushing leader? Hell no!

As far as the "next logical step" - where in your progression are you whipped and crucified? Do you have to suffer and die for the inhabitants of whatever planet you are assigned? If YOU don't have to do these to become "perfect in every way" BUT Jesus did, does that you better or worse than Jesus? ((again: if you say you are worse than Jesus because of this, how then is your path to perfection to correct one? And if you say you are better than Jesus - go check out that 1st Commandment again. And if you say it is merely a DIFFERENT path, then WHY did Jesus have to suffer and die, if there was a different path?)

Only God is God. The angels are perfect and yet they never are considered gods. They never even sin or have sinned and yet they cover their face and their feet when in God's presence. It makes you realize how much God is above us and the kind of praise and respect he deserves. Yes we will one day be transformed and be given perfect bodies, but no amount of time could make us gods. Your concepts are not biblical, so that is why most people disagree with you. Just because it appeals to your logic, does not make it true. Actually that belief is very pagan and a total corruption of Christian teaching.

Response to your response:

There is no one on earth who can create life. Physically or "spiritually" (whatever that means). Only God has that ability. We can tinker with pre-existing life, but only God is The Creator. Even the devil himself can't create life. Although he has made some little organic machines made of protein and dna called viruses.

We are to try to be like him. It is impossible to be God (as Satan found and is finding)We were made by God, the creation can never be the same as the creator. We were made to worship God in this life and the next. He promises us eternal life and powers to do his work, not to be equal to him.
Your children are always your children. Yes they grow up and become more like friends but they are still your children. Just as God expects us to grow up, we are still to be "as little children "and come unto him.
God's creation are all equal, why would only "some" people reach God status? Yes I believe there will be an "chain of command" on the new earth, but no man will ever be equal with or to God. Jesus is the only one to be worshiped with God. (He became flesh, he was not created flesh. We were created flesh to become like him. To become like the original, is the goal, but there is only one original.
God did not send his true prophet away from the problems or persecution, he sent them to deal with it. ( Joseph Smith went to Utah to escape persecution, and the problems his "religious experience" caused. Noah stayed, Moses returned, Abraham came into "other nations" more then once, Jesus went to the people even unto his death, Paul went to the problem, there are so many more.)
I don't think your wacked, just misguided.

Hosea 11:9 says; “…For I am God and not man, the Holy One in the midst of thee…”

Malachai 3:6 says; “For I am the LORD, I change not…”

Even your own so-called "scriptures" declare:

Mormon 8:18; “For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity”.

Talk about spiritual schizophrenia!!!

You are right Tony, it is not very Christ like to make personal attacks against someones belief system.

It is not just a Christian trait though. Think about your ward. How many people have been put aside, or ignored or even excommunicated because they had a differing view of scripture.

I think you will find that there are lots of non Christ like traits happening in the LDS faith, and many of them are happening in the higher offices.

Some people's minds cannot even begin to grasp that concept. With them, God is God, that is that. He always has been and always will be.
And yes, God is God. He is our God, our only God. He wants us to be like him, He wants us to inherit all He has and live eternally with Him. How could that not also include becoming a 'god'? And, I think it will be the prophets and those who were closest to "perfection" and that it will take a long time to get there...
Good question.

No, because you see that's just it. We can't be perfect, no matter how hard you try you're going to end up sinning sometime. If you look at yourself as a god, then you're going to put yourself before God and that is a sin. There is no way for us to become God, it just doesn't work. Remeber that movie Bruce Almighty, see what happened to him in the end.

HITAN ( Democracy in Heaven )
--goal is to overthrow the CREATOR and install democracy in Heaven.

Well the first thing is that we can not be like Jesus, he was prefect, he did not experience married, no children of his own.
We should look at Job as an example we should mold ourselves towards, he was a man imperfect, had a family, suffered.

Daniel 7:18
But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.

There is one kingdom, one God, one people. Amen.

Ephesians
4There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
