Unless someone else with open cold sores just put their mouth on the fruit, and then you put it into your mouth, there is no way a fruit could give you cold sores.

In some cases, however, an acidic fruit like citrus fruit or pineapple could irritate your mouth temporarily. This is because the acid in those fruits agitates any existing minor cut or break in the skin (such as chapped lips). It may seem to feel like a cold sore temporarily while eating such fruit, but the pain should subside shortly after eating it.

My grandfather had problems with really acidly fruits like oranges and grapefruits and they use to irritate his cold sores. Cold sores are a virus kinda like a form of herpes- you can't caught them from fruit but certain types of fruit may irritate or make them act up.

i've heard oranges and i think tomatos at least irritate cold sores (don't know about actually causing them??) - it's the acidity.
