Don't be afraid to get up and walk out if they don't give you what you want.

You need to find the dealer invoice price on the vehicle. That is the price the dealership paid for the car. They will not go below this price, even though if you get financed in house, they will be making lots of money back off the interest. MSRP is how much the manufacturer suggests it would sell for, but dealer invoice is often 20% or more below this. If you find a salesman hungry for a sale, you can get them pretty close to dealer invoice price.
Try to find out how long it has been on the lot. Do your research on the make and model you want, ask about warranties, just sound like you know what you are talking about. If they won't budge on the price, don't be afraid to walk away. There is always the next dealership.
You may be able to get a quote from them and take it to another dealership and see if they can beat the price, if they can't, you are probably getting a fair deal.

DO NOT LET THEM KNOW HOW MUCH YOU CAN, OR ARE WILLING TO SPEND! The price should be the last thing discussed, trust me, show them you are interested by asking questions, and negotiating on the price, if they will not budge, walk away.

Don't ever tell a salesman how much you are willing to put down for a down payment or what you can afford to pay a month. They have a mental scale in their head that determines what they are going to sell you the car for when they have that information, so they end up with the best commision they can. Keep in mind they don't care about you, only the sale, because after the sale you are no longer their problem. Make them meet your terms and don't do the selling for them. Just know what YOU want and NOT what they want to sell you. It doesn't hurt to get a deal from one dealer and then go across the street to the competition and tell them to make you a better deal and then go right back to the first guy. Play them against each other. You'd be surprised what dealers will do to avoid losing a sale to the competition.Don't act too excited or interested in any certain thing, they will jump through hoops if you remind them they are NOT the only dealer in town. Once you agree on a price, then you can talk about financing and down payment,etc....Always research the cars and challenge the dealers knowledge about the pros and cons of the car in question. Just remember you will be making the payments out of YOUR hard earned money and you sure don't want to waste it on something your not going to be happy with.

Definitely go to the dealership knowing exactly what you are looking for and how much money you want to spend. Let the dealer know this upfront and that you are not willing to budge on it either. Let them know what you are looking for in a car, whether it's certain options, make and model, interior things such as leather or other material on the seats and so on. Just go in knowing what you want and how much you are willing to spend. This will or should, help you not get hassled or intimidated as much by the dealer to get hooked into something you don't want or by spending more on a car than you had wanted to. Remember, they do get paid commission on all their sales and the more money they can get their customers to spend on a vehicle, the more money they get on their paychecks.

Intimidation comes from within, not from a car salesman.

If you don't have a backbone to defend your rights as a consumer I'm afraid that you would be intimidated by Mother Goose.

Know what you want when you go buy. Know what you're willing to spend, and by all means -- do your homework on the type of car before going there!

car dealers don't intimidate you ,its just a feeling you get, the best way to be is don't act like you want the car that much, they can see if your eager or not, just take your time with it,and look at other cars ,there's really no way to win with a salesman, you are going to have to deal with them if you want the car,so act like you have good common sense and you,ll do alright.

1. Know exactly what you want
2. Check the invoice, offer $500 over invoice (THE MOST!!!),
3. Preferably bring a cashiers check or money order
4. Make financing arrangements up front with your bank or credit union
5. Negotiate trade-in (if any) and purchase SEPARATELY

Go online to get competitive prices. When you get to the dealership hem and haw awhile, then offer a low price. Until He says sold, you are free, and can go elsewhere, so don't be in a hurry.
