Not necessarily. It is optional. Your choice and your style. It is not cast in stone. A lot of people get married without getting engaged. Some others get engaged but never ever get married. others get engaged and then get married.

'Will you get engaged to me?' just doesn't have the same romantic ring as 'Will you marry me?'. Unless you're both just wanting an excuse for a big engagement party. However, you will then be under constant attack from relatives who will be asking when you will finally tie the knot. And your partner will generally presume that engagement means marriage at some point, so will eventually wonder what's going on.

It depends on where you live and what your culture is like. Some cultures the parents arrange the marriage, which makes the couple "engaged" without either one asking "will you marry me?". However, in most cultures, an engagement is not official until you get the ring and the question.

Well how else would it happen? When one is engaged it means he or she is taken by another who loves them, and they are in the process of getting married.

yes, whats the point in being engaged if you dont plan on marrying them. U obviously aren't with the right person or dont feel ready, when u do you will have no hesitations.

Yeah, you do. Otherwise you could have your whole wedding planned only to find out that your "other" wasn't even interested in getting married!! And you'd loose that special feeling of when you were asked/did ask, and all the romance that goes with that. Good luck! ;)

Yes, you don't ask someone to get engaged to you for no reason.

Unless your intended is psychic asking them would definitely be a good idea. But a long engagement or party isnt necessary.

thats kinda what getting engaged means, that you intend to get married, so its sorta imposible to be engaged without an agreement on that
