I usually mail in my return but for the first time in a lot of years we are getting money back. I bought the TurboTax Basic but I want to know if you have to pay to e-file seperately even though you bought the turbotax? Does that make sense?? The box says e-file fees apply??? Should I buy a TurboTax deluxe? Help!!! I haven't even opened the box yet because I don't want to waste my time and money if you have to pay more anyway. Thanks in advance!!

Why pay when you can prepare and e-file your returns for free?
The IRS sponsors the Free File Alliance that allows millions of taxpayers to file their federal returns for free.
Using the free service is fast and easy. And you will receive your refund in the same amount of time.
Some of the free services also offer free state filing. If a service does not use free state filing, you can always go to your state's Dept. of Revenue and see if they offer it.

Go to: http://www.irs.gov and click the "2007 Free File" link to see what services you qualify for.

Sneaky little fact: e-filing fees are separate from the software package.

I suppose this was to address complaints from consumer groups that these fees aren't broken out from the software cost. And because these fees from the efiling company had not been outlined when the software was released back in November, Intuit must've figured it better to simply leave it open rather than roll it into the cost of the software.

Whether you use the desktop or online version of TT, you have the option of printing off the completed forms and sending them directly to the IRS regional processing office, thereby bypassing the efiling fee.

But I haven't done that in years because the cost of efiling is still less than the time and money spent hightailing it to the local PO, having the forms sent by certified mail, return receipt requested, and hoping it doesn't get lost in the mail. As well as the peace of mind that the IRS won't screw up transcribing my return into their computers, or delaying my refund any more than it could be.

Depending on which package you bought, it may have come with e-filing or not.
If you look at these TurboTax Coupons: http://www.dealtaker.com/TurboTax-coupon-code-a2068-c.html
you'll see some offers are with free e-file, and others you pay for separately.
So probably for the package you bought, it is a separate charge.
