We face the Kaaba in Makkah.
The Kaabah is situated within the Holy Mosque in Makkah.
It is a structure made of bricks and covered with a black cloth.

In Mecca you face the Kaaba. This is actually what every Muslim faces when praying, it just happens to be in Mecca. So if you are to the east of the Kaaba, you pray facing the west, to the north, you face the south, and so on.

Hope it helps!
Good luck!

Free Fighter: Good topic! Actually, facing the Kaaba isn't an absolute requirement for prayer. If one doesn't know where the Kaaba is located, then he can make a guess and pray in that direction. Take for example the tribes who travel through the dessert. Sometimes they lose direction to the Kaaba and don't know which way to face. Or even those who are on planes, trains, cruise ships, etc that don't stop for prayer and are constantly changing direction. We can still pray even then. Overall, prayer is the most important thing. Direction of prayer establishes unity among all Muslims, but when you can't face the proper direction, God doesn't blame you as long as you keep your prayers.

Edit::::>>>>
Free Fighter.... The whole world belongs to Allah, you can pray anywhere that satisfy your heart... For example, When I first move to this new house, I didn't know which way would I face. Later, I just faced toward the corner of the room. When I found a compass, believe me I was correct. :)
About the Plane,,, You can pray sitting in a car or plane. It does not matter what direction it is going....
I heard that in Saudi Airlines they have room for the prayer and in the room they have a compass that lets them know which way to pray...........
.
About the Astronaut.... I am not sure.... good question though... will ask someone.....
:)

If you are in mecca, you pray towards the kabaa. There is some debate though about muslims in north/south america. Do they pray east towards mecca, or west?

Towards the Kaabah, and if you're in the Kaabah, towards the Black Stone (I think).
