In some churches I am familiar with, the hymns' numbers are posted a the front of the church. it might look like this

these refer to number of the hymn in the hymnal, the book that has the words, and sometimes the melody, of the songs.

It is for the nursery & childrens dept. Each child has a number and when there is a problem with their child they flash the child's number so the parents can go check on the child

It has to be some gimmick. Churches decide to do alot of different things which seem to be a good idea at the time, but only later on they wonder what were they thinking.
