It is said to be a rock from Heaven, but even then, its just a rock.
It is reported by Ibn 'Abbas that 'Umar bent down towards the Black Stone and said: "By Allah! I know that you are a mere stone, and if I had not seen my beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) kissing you and touching you I would have never done so."

first you have to know that Islam literally means submitting to God, then a Muslim should pay due respect and obey God's orders whatever are they . Hence , If a Muslim knows that a single thing is a correct rite( correct means it is deeply rooted in the Faith and it is agreed that it has been done by Prophet Muhammad peace be upon Him and early Muslims) then he has to do it without delay. So if it is known that while visiting Holy Mosque in Mecca , Muslims should kiss or just refer to it by hands , they must di it to get correct rite. I must mention that Omar Ben Khatab once said " I know that you are only a stone ( he was addressing the Black stone) that has no ability of getting goodness nor harm to any body , and if God has not ordered to kiss you , I would never do that "
Finally I want to add that the Black Stone is a stone from paradise , and it was originally white , but it has been blackened with humans' sins

Years ago scientists were allowed to examine the stone and found that it was a meteor. Since then, no one is allowed to see it, but they still encourage the followers to come and wordhip it. It's amazing how many times the religions pull the wool over the followers eyes. What a business.

Actually when Abraham was building the Ka'aba with Ishmael he wanted to put a unique rock to be the starting point from people to walk around Ka'aba as part of the pilgrimage..
anyway he told Ishmael to go get a rock, when he didn't find a unique one, he came back and found Abraham with a black rock, he asked him where did he get it from, he answered him and said: Gabriel gave it to me ...
Therefore, it has great importance...

Every one needs a form to pray till one experiences the formless. It hardly matters whether that form a Book, Statue, Portrait, Rock or any other form. Its not wise to disturb any ones faith.
