I'm not questioning the popularity of tattooing itself. It's an ancient art of ornamenting one's body whether one likes it or not. But why the hell put Chinese or Hebrew on your body while you aren't Chinese or Jewish? Is the whole world going through an identity crisis?

Some people find things from other cultures to be beautiful and or fascinating. Mysterious even. If a person wants to take something from said other culture, I'm all for it. I have the word "TATTOO" on my back in Hangul (Korean).

I really don't understand it either. I'm sure when I was 13 I thought it was cool, but now I look back on that and laugh...a lot.

I think its just a huge sign saying "I lack creativity and have no real passions" or it could be an identity crisis.

I only know ONE person who go that whole language tattoo correct and it was my Jewish friend who got a Hebrew tattoo and KNEW what it meant so she didn't have to worry about it ending up saying tramp or whatever.

There are a few possible explanations:

1) Chinese and Hebrew scripts are ornamental

2) people may be fans of either of those cultures

3) it's a way of encrypting words

4) it's a contagious fashion...

You should go to a body art shop and ask the guy that does the tattoos what some peoples reasons are. I think its just because its new and funky looking. Personally feel its really stupid puting a language on you you dont speak lol but ya I think its cos its fresh and new.
